A Letter to My Non-Mom Friends

Being part of this exclusive tribe called “moms” is awesome. I mean, I had the opportunity to actually carry another human inside of me, give birth to this sweet pea and now, raise them to live purposeful, happy lives. Now, as a mom of three kiddos, (and a business owner) I realized something. While basking in this light of love called motherhood, I became THAT mom. The mom oblivious to how this messy, loud, sometimes overwhelming existence affected her non-mom friends. For that, here is my apology letter.

Dear Non-mom Friend,

Let me first say that I love you. You have been patient when I have to reschedule plans because my kid wasn’t feeling the babysitter and no one but me knew exactly how to sing the goodnight song.

  1. I apologize for not being available for casual conversation on the phone. Telling my kids that I’m on the phone somehow translates to them to speak louder.
  2. I apologize but I can’t help to share my kid’s achievements every chance I get. Just nod in agreement.
  3. Speaking of sharing, I apologize for the numerous Facebook posts detailing everything from using the potty for the first time to our matching outfits. Give the post a “like”, maybe a comment. Sharing on your page is optional.
  4. I apologize for asking you to buy a crappy candy bar to fund raise for baseball uniforms. You do anything for your kids. Including asking friends, family – and sometimes strangers – for money.
  5. I apologize that my car has now become an extension of my house with fruit snacks, toy cars and baby wipes covering what used to be a respectable automobile. You can ride in it but, give me a minute to wipe down what I’m guessing is weeks old applesauce (I hope).
  6. I apologize that I have to cancel – yet again – our plans. I look forward to escaping for a few hours to just be “me” and not “MOM!” Please don’t stop inviting me because I cherish that time with you.

You knew me before I became a mom. Deep inside, I am the same girl you’ve laughed, cried and danced all night long with. I’m still here. I just happen to have a crew now which means a new perspective and responsibilities. But, I’m still here.

Signed,

Your Friend Who is a Mom Now
