Detroit Mom’s Guide to February

These winter months here in Detroit can be so frigid and sometimes even a bit dull.  While we dream of warmer weather and the day we will be able to break out the flip flops and tank tops – we can still have a great time with our families in+around Detroit!  Lucky for you this short month is jam packed full of fun things to get out of the house and shake off some of the winter blues, here’s a list of some things we LOVE happening in and around Detroit this month!  If you have any to add be sure to let us know!!

12th Annual Fire & Ice Chili Cookoff and Pub Crawl

Location :: Downtown Mount Clemens

Cost :: $15 per person or $25 for two people

All proceeds of this event benefit the Anton Art Center and the Mount Clemens Goodfellows. Participants receive a “taster” chili at each location, souvenir chili pepper beads and score card.  Participating establishments include:  Abibbo, Bath City Bistro, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chantel’s Jailhouse Deli, Madison’s Pub, O’Halloran’s Public House, Orleans Sports Cafe, Rec Bowl, Seeburger’s Cheeseburgers, Three Blind Mice Irish Pub, and Your Mothers.

Candy Land Daddy Daughter Dance

Give the Gift of Love Blood Drive

This is a great opportunity for the entire family to spend time outdoors during the Michigan winter while enjoying this unique show with carving demonstrations throughout the event. The show opens on Friday, February 3 and runs through Sunday, February 5.

Live ice carving demonstrations will be held on Friday, February 5 from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, Saturday, February 6 from Noon until 4:00 PM, and Sunday, February 7 from Noon until 3:00 PM. Public ice carving will take place on the Fountain Stage located on Macomb Place between Walnut and Pine Streets. In addition to live carving, dozens of sculptures will be featured on the sidewalks of Downtown Mount Clemens along Macomb Place and Cherry Street Mall.

Owl Nights

DIY for Kids Valentine’s Photo Box Workshop

Join our hands-on workshop and you and your child can build a Valentine-themed photo box, perfect for keeping photos of loved ones front and center. Once the box is built, your child can decorate it with paint and The Home Depot stickers.

Duel in the D

The “Duel in the D” features the most-played rivalry in college hockey, Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State University Spartans, as the two teams have squared off 309 times, with the Wolverines currently holding a slight edge in the all-time series, 159-131-19. Michigan and Michigan State have met at least once per season at Joe Louis Arena since 1990, with the Wolverines holding the series advantage in the annual game at The Joe with a 14-11-4 record.

Detroit Youth Day of Vision

Join us for an interactive day of envisioning the next 50 years in Detroit using the lessons learned from the tumultuous summer of 1967. The Youth Day of Vision is hosted by the Detroit Historical Museum and the James and Grace Lee Boggs Center to Nurture Community Leadership. The day’s activities, designed and facilitated by Detroit youth, will center around the events of 1967 – when Detroiters rebelled against police violence, racist housing segregation, and unemployment. How much has changed in the 50 years since? How will our generation create our own unique American revolution to end injustice, oppression, and violence in the next 50 years?

Great Backyard Bird Count

Each year, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology collects bird data from all over the world. Help a naturalist identify and count the birds visiting the SNC feeders. Learn how you can do the same in your own backyard. Binoculars and field guides will be available for use during the program or bring your own. Children should be accompanied by a registered adult.

27th Annual Walk for Warmth

Paczki Run 5K 2017

African American History Family Day
