Detroit Moms Guide To July

The middle month of summer is here!  By now you’re used to having the kids at home and knee deep in BBQs, splash pad play dates and perhaps even a summer reading program? There are a lot of opportunities this month to get the family outside to enjoy a concert series (or 2 or 3 or 4)  Here’s a guide of activities to keep you busy during this super hot month.  If you don’t see something here that you think our readers would enjoy with (or without) their kids, please feel free to let us know and add it to our calendar!

Girls Day Out!

Plymouth’s 150 OVA Run/Walk

Location :: Downtown Plymouth

Whether you’re an avid runner or just enjoy a nice stroll with your family – come join us for a 3-mile family fun run/walk.  The course is mapped out for people of all ages to take part in the Old Village 5K Fun Run!  Each participant will receive a bib, tee shirt and race packs full of goodies. The race will kick off at 9 a.m., take you through the lovely streets of downtown Plymouth, finishing in the heart of Old Village. 

Yankee Doodle Dandy

Summer Sundays at The Farm

Farm fanatics – check this out:  With the price of admission you get entrance to the farm, meet all the farm animals, a hayride, and a farmer will be in the barn to help the brave ones MILK A COW!!!!! Water Game Weekend

Ford Free Fun Day at Michigan Science Center

A long-time supporter of the Michigan Science Center (MiSci), Ford Motor Company, is continuing its partnership with MiSci by sponsoring four Ford Fun Free Days over the next year. MiSci inspires and engages curious minds of all ages with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and for the second year in a row, Ford’s generous support will allow MiSci to extend its reach to a wider audience. In the past, more than 10,000 visitors visited MiSci during Ford Fun Free Days.

July 4 Fishing Derby

Hey kids! Looking for some fun on your 4th of July afternoon? Maybury State Park will be hosting a fishing derby on July 4th from 1:00-3:00pm. Prizes will be given and awarded in age groups for the most fish caught and largest fish caught. You do not have to be present to win and you may enter the contest between 1:00 & 3:00pm! Fishing will take place at the fishing pond, which is accessible from the Riding Stable parking lot. Enter the park on Beck Rd. and follow the signs to the pond! Concert-goers are invited to bring a blanket and pack a picnic. Cooler checks will be done and as a reminder there is no beer, wine, alcohol or glass allowed on property. The Detroit Zoo gets even wilder on Wednesday nights during July and August with its annual Wild Summer Nights concert series. Concerts take place in the Zoo’s Main Picnic Grove from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wild Summer Nights features a variety of live music from local bands, including children’s, jazz, pop, folk and blues. Concert-goers are invited to bring a blanket and pack a picnic. Cooler checks will be done and as a reminder there is no beer, wine, alcohol or glass allowed on property. Food, snacks, beer, wine and soft drinks are available for purchase from Zoo concessions.

3rd Annual Autism Hero Walk

The 3rd annual Autism Hero Walk will raise funds for crucial programming in the state of Michigan. Autism Alliance of Michigan is leading Michigan on the path to becoming a top 5 state in which to raise a child with autism. 

The Walk begins with an energetic opening ceremony followed by a 1-mile walk through the Detroit Zoo. Immediately following the walk, attendees are encouraged to enjoy a day at the Zoo and post-walk activities at the events pavilion.
