DMB Welcomes Artina, a Detroit Mom

Hey all, hey! I’m Artina.

My Life

I was raised in Detroit and am a proud product of Detroit Public Schools. After graduating from Renaissance High School, I attended Michigan State University (Go Green!) and graduated with a degree in Social Science. Upon graduating from State, I moved back to Detroit and worked as a College Advisor. My life as a college advisor pushed me to become a teacher. Once my two years of service was up, I moved to Washington DC where I taught students with special needs for two years.

Babies & Beyond

During my time in DC, I became a mother! On April 26, 2016 at 2:49 PM we welcomed our son, Asar (Baby A) right in the bedroom of our apartment. Don’t worry, it was a planned homebirth. You can read more about that here. My partner and I didn’t have any family in DC and decided to move back to the city. We moved back to Detroit two weeks after our son was born. Last year we bought a house just a few blocks from where I grew up and only 15 minutes from everything. We are so close to being done with renovations!

Baby A is now two years old and into everything! When he’s not somewhere making a mess, he’s likely to be attached to me. We’re in month 25 of our breastfeeding journey and I’m secretly hoping for him to self-wean sooner than later. Baby A loves swimming, singing, and will likely be a chef in the future. He’s somewhat of a mix of his dad and me. He is my everything and my reason why. My life is truly better because of him. Being a mom is my greatest role. I’m a babywearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, attachment parenting mommy.

More than a Mom

Lately I’ve found myself wearing many hats… teacher, doula, blogger, student etc.  I consider myself an amateur chef, wannabe fitness guru and world traveler. My guilty pleasures are pizza, wine, and reality TV. The presence of all three equates to a good time for me. My friends would describe me as the go to know it all, master event and travel planner, and an all around good time. My partner would describe me as impatient, caring, dramatic, and thoughtful…and yes, those are his exact words.

Detroit Favs

Beverage: Vernors
Grocery Shopping: Randazzo & Eastern Market
Eats: Delmonico steak and loaded baked potato from Capers
Dessert: Dutch Girl Donuts…red velvet donut holes are my fav!
Entertainment: Sporting Events & Concerts downtown
Date Night:
Girls Day Out: Day parties in Midtown/Downtown and/or brunch anywhere with bottomless mimosas

Why Detroit?

When people ask me why Detroit, my response is “WHY NOT?” I am a proud product of my environment. Detroit not only raised me, but made me. I grew up here and truly believe that since I made it here that I can make it anywhere. I love raising my son here. We love trying new brunch spots, pizza at the original Buddy’s, donuts from Dutch Girls, trips to the Children’s Library at Main and Wilder, babywearing down the Riverwalk, going to sports events, and trying new things. I’m excited to share my city and our experiences with all of you! We’re always looking for new friends, so if you’re ever in the city and see us out, be sure to say hi.
