Fruit Picking In Metro Detroit

We all know that Metro Detroit has some pretty stellar apple orchards. But, did you know many of the apple orchards offer other produce to pick (and some of them even have cider and donuts available!). As crops can sometimes be unpredictable (due to our crazy Michigan weather), please be sure to call the orchards before going to insure they have crops to pick.

OAKLAND COUNTY
Erwin’s Orchard

April-June: Asparagus is a spring crop and typically ready to harvest in April, May, and June. This is a you pick crop.

July: Sweet cherries are typically ripe and ready too pick at the beginning of July. The season lasts about three weeks, and is you pick. Red raspberries are usually available to pick beginning in late July, and yellow raspberry picking begins in mid June both available to pick until the first frost. These are you pick.

June: Pea season usually begins around the third week of June. Long’s will shell the seeds with their Amish built pea sheller. You can even see how it works. Pea season usually only lasts 7-10 days.

Sweet corn is cold pre-bagged by the 1/2 dozen or a full dozen. The corn is hand picked every morning. Look for the big red shed located on Bogie Lake Rd. just north of Commerce Rd.

June: Miller’s will open in June and offers a variety of fruits and vegetables. Be sure to check and see what will be ready to pick.

June: Strawberries are avalible to pick starting in early June. Cherries are ready in late June. Both crops have a one quart minimum per person (under 30 inches free).

July: In early July reaspberries are ready to pick. There is a one quart minimum per person (under 30 inches free).

When in season Verellen Orchards offers many kinds of produce. Be sure to call to see what is available.

Peaches varieties: early red haven, glo haven, coral star, red haven, harmony, crest haven, allstar, bellaire.

Fruit: strawberries cherries, apricots, nectarines, pears, grapes, plums, blueberries, watermelon, melon, raspberries, blackberries

Vegetables: sweet corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, green and yellow beans, potatoes, onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, peppers, squash, zucchini. garlic, dill, rhubarb, celery, radishes, beets.

June: Starting in June you pick strawberries are available.

July: In July you can beginning picking red tart cherries, and sweet cherries. Plus Spicer Orchars has a pitting machine. Also available to pick are red raspberries and blueberries.

August: In August fall read raspberries are ready to pick. Plums and peaches are also available in the market.

September: in September you can pick blue Stanley plums. Pears are also available in the market.

July: Montmorency cherries are usually ready to pick around July 4. The season is short, usually only lasting two or three weeks. Black and red currants are also ready to pick in the beginning of July. Goodeberries, a small green tart berry are also available to pick in July.

Pears and plums are also available when in season.

September: a limited number of raspberries are available to pick.
