Thank You to My Ex

An open letter to the man I once thought was my Prince Charming:

I created my own happily ever after. I couldn’t have done it if you hadn’t broken my heart. So, thank you. Thank you for all of the life altering lessons I’ve learned in the past two years. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Thank you for proving that a house is not a home. I once obsessed over Pottery Barn furniture and overly priced kitchen gadgets. I now know that none of that those things mean anything without love. A house is just a house. Love is what makes a HOME. I may have few material things, yet today, I have everything. I have love, laughter, family, and friends. I now realize what really matters in life.

Thank you for showing me that things aren’t necessarily what they appear to be and that sometimes things are simply just too good to be true. A pretty picture can be an illusion. I now know now that this is the truth.

Thank you for making me realize that I’m stronger than I ever could have imagined. I have survived more emotional turmoil than I ever thought possible. I rise. I thank God. I meditate. I pray.  I smile. I am still smiling. I will continue to smile.

Thank you for teaching me about the life and love I deserve and that settling is never an option. My greatest responsibility is to model a healthy relationship for our little girl. I might die trying but I will never ever settle for less than what we deserve. I would have never known exactly what I needed, if I hadn’t met you.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to experience true love. Nothing could have prepared me for something so awe-inspiring and all encompassing. I have never known such a selfless, all consuming love; the love of being her mother.

Thank you for proving that although the fantasy in my head of what our life was like and what it could have been was definitely beautiful…BUT..the reality of my life?…Although sometimes challenging, it is far more perfect than anything I could have ever dreamt up, perfectly imperfect.

Thank you for proving time and again that love will always win. I know that this is truth because I see it in our daughter’s precious eyes, I hear it in her giggles, and I feel it in her big ‘ol hugs. Lastly, and most importantly? I will forever thank you for the beautiful gift that is our little one. I am HER mom because of you. And for that, I am indebted in gratitude to you forever. I am without a doubt the luckiest mama.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart…

Sincerely,

Your Ex-Wife

  1. Very honest. Although you may be giving too much credit to someone else. Most of the things you deacribed came from within you and were there all along.
    Your gratefulness is refreshingly uncommon.
